## What happened

On **2 November 2026**, the final **HSBC India Manufacturing PMI** for **October 2026** was released. As reported by PTI and ANI, citing the S&P Global survey:

- The headline PMI eased to **54.7** in October from **55.1** in September.
- The reading stayed well above the **50.0** no-change mark and above its long-run average, so factory activity kept **expanding**, only a little more slowly.
- **New export orders** grew at their fastest pace in **six months**.
- The final figure came in slightly below the **flash estimate of 54.9** that S&P Global published on 23 October 2026.

## Background

**What is a PMI?** A Purchasing Managers' Index is a monthly survey-based indicator of business conditions. The India manufacturing PMI is **compiled by S&P Global** and carries **HSBC's** name, which is why it is called the HSBC India Manufacturing PMI.

How it works, as described in the S&P Global release:

1. **Panel:** purchasing managers at around **400 manufacturers**, chosen by sector and workforce size in line with each sector's contribution to GDP.
2. **Question:** firms say whether a variable (output, new orders, jobs and so on) is **higher, the same or lower** than a month ago. Responses are collected in the second half of the month.
3. **Calculation:** each index = **% of "higher" replies + half of the % of "unchanged" replies**. It ranges from 0 to 100 and is seasonally adjusted.
4. **The 50 line:** above 50 means the variable **rose** from the previous month; below 50 means it **fell**. The distance from 50 shows how broad the change is.
5. **History:** data collection for the India manufacturing survey began in **March 2005**.

**Flash and final.** S&P Global first issues a **flash** India PMI late in the month, based on about **80–90%** of the final responses. The **final** manufacturing figure follows at the start of the next month.

## Key details

**Headline PMI: the five components and their weights**

| Component | Weight | October 2026 reading (direction) |
|---|---|---|
| New Orders | 30% | Rose sharply; growth eased marginally from September's seven-month high |
| Output | 25% | Rose sharply, but slower than in September |
| Employment | 20% | Rose for a second straight month, at a slight pace |
| Suppliers' Delivery Times | 15% (inverted) | — |
| Stocks of Purchases | 10% | Fastest rise in eight months |

The delivery-times index is **inverted** so that it moves in the same direction as the other four components.

**Other findings for October 2026** (as reported by PTI and ANI):

- **Export demand:** firms reported more orders from Bangladesh, Canada, Indonesia, Nepal, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, the UK, the US and the UAE.
- **Input costs:** inflation fell to its lowest since February, though some material and energy costs still rose.
- **Selling prices:** rose at the weakest pace in just under four years.
- **Inventories:** firms built input stocks as a buffer against possible shortages.
- **Confidence:** business sentiment weakened from September and was below its long-run average. About **18%** of firms expect output to rise over the next year.

**HSBC's view:** Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC, said strong international demand lifted new export order growth to a six-month high and supported a robust rise in output, while input and output price pressures eased slightly.

**Flash PMI, 23 October 2026 (S&P Global):** Manufacturing PMI 54.9, Composite Output Index 56.7 and Services Business Activity Index 56.2.

**How PMI differs from IIP**

| Feature | Manufacturing PMI | Index of Industrial Production (IIP) |
|---|---|---|
| Compiled by | S&P Global (private), HSBC-branded | Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) |
| Method | Survey of about 400 purchasing managers | Production data from factories and establishments |
| Measures | Direction and breadth of month-on-month change | Volume of production against a base year (2022-23 = 100) |
| Key number | 50 = no change | Year-on-year % growth |
| Timing | Final reading on the first working days of the next month | Quick estimate on the 28th of the following month |
| Revisions | Survey data not revised; seasonal factors may be | Quick estimates revised later |
| Coverage | Manufacturing only | Mining, manufacturing, electricity and gas, water supply |

For comparison, MoSPI's quick estimate on 28 October 2026 put **September 2026 IIP growth at 6.7%**, with manufacturing (weight 76.062) up 7.6%. Read more in our [IIP September 2026 explainer](/current-affairs/news/iip-september-2026-industrial-production-growth-6-7-percent). The October 2026 IIP is due on 30 November 2026.

## Why it matters

1. **Early signal:** PMI comes out about four weeks before IIP for the same month, so markets and policymakers use it as a first read on factory conditions.
2. **External demand:** a six-month high in export orders shows overseas buyers supporting Indian factories even as overall growth eased.
3. **Inflation:** the slowest rise in selling prices in nearly four years points to softer price pressure on goods, which matters for monetary policy.
4. **Supply chains:** firms stocking up on inputs to guard against shortages reflects caution about a volatile global environment, in HSBC's reading.

## Issues and criticism

- **Direction, not size:** a PMI of 54.7 says more firms reported growth than decline. It does not measure how much output grew in volume terms.
- **Sample size:** about 400 firms is a small panel for a large and varied manufacturing sector, so PMI and IIP can diverge in a given month.
- **Softer momentum:** the headline was below September and well below October 2025's **59.2**, and business confidence was below its long-run average.
- **Jobs:** hiring was slight despite strong orders, so job creation lagged output.

## Way forward

- Watch whether export orders keep rising while domestic orders level off.
- Compare the October PMI with the October IIP on 30 November 2026 to see if both point the same way.
- Track input and output prices for signs that softer goods inflation is lasting.

## Prelims pointers

- HSBC India Manufacturing PMI, October 2026 (final): **54.7**; September 2026: **55.1**; flash for October: **54.9**.
- The PMI is compiled by **S&P Global** from a panel of about **400 manufacturers**.
- **50** separates expansion (above) from contraction (below).
- Headline weights: New Orders **30%**, Output **25%**, Employment **20%**, Suppliers' Delivery Times **15% (inverted)**, Stocks of Purchases **10%**.
- October 2026: new export orders at a **six-month high**; selling-price rise weakest in just under four years.
- India manufacturing PMI data collection began in **March 2005**.
- IIP is compiled by **MoSPI** with base year **2022-23**; quick estimates come on the 28th of each month.

## One-liners for SSC, Banking and Railways

- India's manufacturing PMI for October 2026 was **54.7**.
- A PMI reading above **50** means expansion.
- The India manufacturing PMI is compiled by **S&P Global** and branded by **HSBC**.
- New Orders carries the **highest weight (30%)** in the headline PMI.
- IIP is released by **MoSPI**; PMI is a private survey.

## Mains practice question

**"Survey-based indicators such as the PMI and official data such as the IIP often tell different stories about Indian manufacturing. Explain the difference between the two and their usefulness for policy."** (GS III, 250 words)

Points to cover:
1. Method: diffusion index from a panel of about 400 firms versus a production volume index (base 2022-23) from MoSPI.
2. Timeliness versus depth: PMI on the first working days of the next month; IIP quick estimate on the 28th, revised later.
3. October 2026 example: PMI 54.7 with export orders at a six-month high; September IIP growth 6.7%.
4. Use both: PMI for direction and prices, IIP for volume; better sampling and faster official data.

## Exam angle
- **UPSC:** GS III: economic indicators, industrial growth, survey vs official data (PMI vs IIP)
- **SSC:** Static + current: PMI meaning, 50 threshold, October 2026 reading 54.7
- **Banking:** Economy: PMI components and weights, flash vs final, price signals for monetary policy
- **Railways:** One-liners: PMI compiled by S&P Global; above 50 means expansion

## Key terms
- **PMI:** Purchasing Managers' Index: a monthly survey index of business conditions; above 50 means improvement from the previous month
- **Diffusion index:** An index built from the share of firms reporting higher, same or lower activity, showing direction and breadth of change
- **Flash PMI:** An early estimate released late in the month, based on about 80–90% of final responses
- **IIP:** Index of Industrial Production: MoSPI's monthly volume index of industrial output, base 2022-23 = 100
