IBPS PO Prelims is a 60-minute paper, but it is really three separate 20-minute papers. Each section has its own timer, and the next section opens only when the current one's time ends. Prelims is qualifying: its marks decide who goes to Mains, not the final merit.

IBPS PO Prelims pattern

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
English Language303020 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude353020 minutes
Reasoning Ability354020 minutes
Total10010060 minutes

This is the pattern IBPS has used for the last two cycles (CRP PO/MT-XV and XVI). Note that Quant has more questions than marks, and Reasoning has more marks than questions.

Marking and negative marking

A wrong answer costs one quarter of the marks for that question. IBPS publishes section totals, not marks per question. If marks are spread evenly within a section, which is how RankVyuh scores its mocks, each question is worth:

SectionMarks per questionLost per wrong answer
English1.000.25
Quant0.8570.214
Reasoning1.1430.286

So a Reasoning question is worth a third more than a Quant question. That is one more reason to protect your Reasoning accuracy.

Sectional cutoffs matter

To clear Prelims you must cross a cutoff in each section as well as the overall cutoff. A very high Reasoning score cannot save a weak English score. Your plan should make sure no section falls below a safe level first, and push the total second.

The 2026 cycle

For CRP PO/MT-XVI, Prelims was held on 22 and 23 August 2026 and Mains on 4 October 2026, as reported from the IBPS schedule. Check ibps.in for results and the official cutoffs.

A 20-minute plan for each section

English (30 questions)

Start with the reading passage if you read quickly, because it carries 8 to 10 questions. Otherwise do error detection, fillers and para jumbles first, and come to the passage with 8 minutes left. Aim for 22 to 25 attempts.

Quantitative Aptitude (35 questions)

Do simplification or approximation first (usually 5 questions in 3 to 4 minutes), then the number series or quadratic equations, then one data interpretation set. Choose the DI set by how quickly you can read the table, not by order. Arithmetic word problems come last. Aim for 20 to 24 attempts.

Reasoning (35 questions)

Puzzles and seating arrangements carry most of the marks, usually 3 to 5 sets of 5 questions each. Do the short topics first (inequality, syllogism, coding, direction, blood relation) in about 7 minutes. Then solve the puzzles you can set up fastest. If a puzzle has not fallen into place in 3 minutes, move on. Aim for 25 to 28 attempts.

Practise with three separate clocks

The skill IBPS Prelims tests most is stopping. When 20 minutes end, the section is gone. RankVyuh's IBPS PO Prelims mocks use the same three locked 20-minute timers, and the report shows your score and time for each section separately.
