NEET UG is the single entrance test for MBBS, BDS and other undergraduate medical courses in India. It is a pen-and-paper test with an OMR answer sheet.

  • Time: 3 hours.
  • All 180 questions are compulsory. The optional Section B (choose 10 of 15) was removed from 2025.
  • Marking: +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong one, 0 if left blank.

What the pattern means for you

Biology is half the paper. 90 questions and 360 marks come from Botany and Zoology, and they are mostly direct, NCERT-based questions. A strong Biology score is the base of every good NEET rank.

One minute per question. 180 questions in 180 minutes leaves little room. Biology questions often take 30 to 40 seconds, which buys time for Physics numericals.

Negative marking is heavy. A wrong answer costs 5 marks compared with a right one (the 4 you missed and the 1 you lose). With four options, a blind guess gains nothing on average. Read our negative marking guide.

A 3-hour plan

  1. Biology first (about 70 minutes for 90 questions). Fast, direct questions build confidence and bank marks early.
  2. Chemistry next (about 45 minutes). Inorganic and organic questions are quick; leave long physical chemistry calculations for a second look.
  3. Physics (about 50 minutes). Do formula-based questions first, then the longer numericals.
  4. Last 15 minutes: check that every answer is marked, and return to the questions you flagged.

In the real exam, fill the OMR as you go, not all at the end. Running out of time with a half-filled sheet is the most expensive mistake in NEET.
