SSC CHSL 2026 brings the biggest change to Tier 1 in years: like CGL 2026, every section now has its own clock. Here is what that means and how to prepare.

SSC CHSL 2026 Tier 1 pattern

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
English Language255015 min
General Intelligence255015 min
Quantitative Aptitude255015 min
General Awareness255015 min
Total10020060 min
  • Marking: +2 for a correct answer, −0.5 for a wrong one, 0 for a skipped question.
  • Sectional timing: each section opens in turn and closes when its 15 minutes end. You cannot return to a closed section, and time you save in one section is not added to the next.
  • Exam dates: SSC has scheduled Tier 1 from 30 November to 31 December 2026, for about 2,536 vacancies (LDC/JSA and DEO).

What changes with a timer per section

No more borrowing time. Earlier, students finished General Awareness in 8 minutes and spent the saved time on Quant. That is gone. A slow Quant section now simply leaves questions unanswered.

Every section needs its own pace. 15 minutes for 25 questions is 36 seconds a question. In General Awareness you will finish early; in Quant you will feel short of time.

Skipping is a skill. With a hard stop, the right move on a long question is to mark it, move on and come back only if time is left in that section.

A plan for each section

  1. English (15 min): do one-word, idioms, spelling and synonyms first (under 20 seconds each), then error spotting, then the cloze and passage.
  2. General Intelligence (15 min): analogies, series and coding first. Leave the longest puzzle question for the end.
  3. Quant (15 min): take the direct-formula questions first (percentage, average, ratio), then geometry and algebra. Never spend over 70 seconds on one question.
  4. General Awareness (15 min): answer what you know in one pass. Don't guess blindly: a wrong answer costs 0.5.
