What happened

India finished the 5th Asian Para Games, held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from 18 to 24 October 2026, with 114 medals: 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze. This is the country's highest medal count at the Games. India placed 4th on the medal table (DD News). According to The Star and Khel Now, China finished first, with host Japan second and Uzbekistan third; Jiji Press (via Nippon.com) also reports Japan in second place. No official results page from the organisers was available to cross-check the full table.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the contingent on X on 25 October, calling it India's best-ever performance at the Asian Para Games and a matter of great pride for the nation. He said every athlete had contributed to the result. On 24 October, President Droupadi Murmu also congratulated the contingent, describing it as unprecedented success (All India Radio).

Background

  • Aichi-Nagoya 2026 was the fifth edition of the Asian Para Games, with 18 sports on the programme. It was the first time Japan hosted the Games (All India Radio).
  • The opening ceremony took place at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya on 18 October. According to All India Radio, about 4,000 athletes and staff from 45 countries and regions took part.
  • India sent a 281-member contingent: 168 athletes (112 men, 56 women) plus 113 officials and support staff. They competed in 11 sports. Para-badminton player Pramod Bhagat and sprinter Simran Sharma were the flag-bearers at the opening ceremony.
  • India's previous best came at Hangzhou (the 2022 Games, held in October 2023). Sources give two figures for it. A DD News report on the PM's message cites 111 medals (29 gold, 31 silver, 51 bronze). A separate DD News report says three of those medals were later withdrawn over doping cases, leaving 108 (27 gold, 32 silver, 49 bronze). On either figure, 114 is a new record.

Notable Indian medallists named in DD News and All India Radio reports

  • Mona Agarwal (para shooting): gold in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions SH1, with a world record and a Games record. She is the first Indian para shooter to win a medal in this event at the Asian Para Games.
  • Haney (para athletics): gold in the men's javelin F37/38, with a world record.
  • Sandeep Kumar (para athletics): gold in the men's 400m T64, with a world record. It was India's 100th medal of these Games.
  • Sumit Antil (para athletics): gold in the men's javelin F42-44/F61-64 (competing in the T64 class), retaining his title; Mahendra Gurjar and Sandip Sanjay Sargar completed an Indian podium sweep.
  • Pranav Soorma (para athletics): gold in the men's club throw F51, with a Games record.
  • Nitesh Kumar (para badminton): gold in the men's singles SL3, beating Pramod Bhagat in the final. Bhagat took silver.
  • Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manasi Joshi (para badminton): gold in the women's doubles SL3-SU5.
  • Harvinder Singh and Vijay Sundi (para archery): gold in the men's recurve doubles. Pooja Jatyan and Bhawna Choudhary won silver in the women's recurve doubles, India's first medal in that event at the Games.
  • Jehan Dorab Madan and Shubham Wadhwa (para table tennis): bronze in the men's doubles MD4. At 50, Madan was India's oldest medallist.

Nishad Kumar and Mona Agarwal, both double gold medallists, carried India's flag at the closing ceremony on 24 October. The next Asian Para Games will be held in Doha in 2030.

Why it matters

  • More medals from fewer athletes: India won more medals with 168 athletes than it did at Hangzhou, where DD News puts the contingent at 309.
  • Records: Indian athletes set world records in shooting (Mona Agarwal) and athletics (Haney and Sandeep Kumar).
  • Inclusion: Strong results in para sport draw attention to the abilities of persons with disabilities, in line with the aims of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
  • Firsts: India won its first medals at the Games in some events, including the women's recurve doubles (archery) and the women's 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 (shooting).

Issues and criticism

  • Reliance on one sport: Para athletics brought 65 of the 114 medals, and 22 of the 30 golds. All the remaining golds came from para badminton, para archery and para shooting.
  • Doping: At Hangzhou, three medals were later withdrawn over doping cases (as reported by DD News), so clean-sport education remains important.
  • The gap at the top: China won 207 golds, according to The Star and Khel Now. India's 30 golds show how much ground is left to cover.

Way forward

  • Develop medal prospects beyond athletics in swimming, table tennis, judo and powerlifting, where India won fewer medals.
  • Build classification expertise, coaches and accessible training centres so that more athletes can take up para sport.
  • Carry the momentum into the next Paralympic cycle and the 2030 Asian Para Games in Doha.
