Quick answer

CMAT has 100 questions worth 400 marks in a three-hour computer-based test, split into five sections of 20 questions and 80 marks each: Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship. A correct answer earns +4, a wrong one costs −1, and a blank scores 0. This follows NTA's CMAT 2026 bulletin; check the 2027 bulletin when it is released.

CMAT, the Common Management Admission Test, is a national-level entrance exam for management programmes, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Its scores are accepted by AICTE-approved institutions. What sets it apart from other MBA entrance tests is a full section on Innovation & Entrepreneurship, which carries the same weight as quant or reasoning.

CMAT exam pattern at a glance

The CMAT 2026 bulletin sets out this structure:

SectionQuestionsMarks
Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation2080
Logical Reasoning2080
Language Comprehension2080
General Awareness2080
Innovation & Entrepreneurship2080
Total100400

The rules around that table:

  • Duration: three hours (180 minutes) for the whole paper.
  • Mode: computer-based test (CBT).
  • Medium: English only.
  • Shifts: NTA says the exam may be held in more than one shift, depending on the number of candidates.
  • Calculator: not allowed. The bulletin lists calculators among prohibited items.
  • Sectional timing: the bulletin gives one duration for the paper and does not set separate time limits for each section. It also says you can move between questions using the Previous and Next buttons or by clicking a question number.

For the topics inside the other four sections, see the CMAT syllabus. For the pattern as it appears in our mocks, see the CMAT exam pattern page.

Marking scheme and negative marking

ResponseMarks
Correct answer+4
Wrong answer−1
Not answered0

To answer a question, you choose one option as the correct one. If NTA drops a question because of a technical error, the bulletin says full marks go to every candidate, whether or not they attempted it. If the answer key is revised after challenges, marks are given according to the revised key.

What the −1 means for guessing

A wrong answer takes away a quarter of what a right answer gives. That makes the arithmetic simple. If your chance of being right is p, a guess is worth 4p − (1 − p) marks on average. That is above zero only when p is greater than 0.2, or one in five.

In practice:

  • A blind guess is not worth much either way, and it adds risk. Leave it blank.
  • If you can rule out options and are torn between two, the odds are clearly in your favour. Answer it.
  • Do not spend three minutes on a question just to reach a 50:50 guess. The time is worth more elsewhere.

Time per question

With 180 minutes for 100 questions, the average is 1.8 minutes per question. But the sections do not take the same time. General Awareness questions are usually answered in seconds: you either know the fact or you do not. Quant and data interpretation sets take longer. Since there is no sectional clock, the time you save in General Awareness and Innovation & Entrepreneurship is what pays for the harder quant and reasoning questions.

The Innovation & Entrepreneurship section

This is the section most students have never seen before, and it is worth exactly as much as quant: 20 questions and 80 marks, a fifth of the paper.

The CMAT 2026 bulletin lists the section and its marks but does not give a topic-wise syllabus for it. So the outline below comes from the subject itself, not from an official list. Treat it as a guide to what the section tests, and check the 2027 bulletin in case NTA adds detail.

Broadly, the questions test whether you understand how new businesses start, grow and get funded in India, and the vocabulary that goes with it. The areas that come up in practice material include:

  • Core ideas: the difference between invention and innovation, types of innovation (product, process, business model), and what makes someone an entrepreneur.
  • Starting a business: forms of business (sole proprietorship, partnership, private limited company), business plans, and the stages of a start-up from idea to scale.
  • Funding: bootstrapping, angel investors, venture capital, seed rounds, and how equity dilution works.
  • Government support: start-up and MSME schemes, incubators and accelerators.
  • Intellectual property: patents, trademarks, copyrights and what each one protects.
  • Thinkers and frameworks: names and ideas that appear often in entrepreneurship textbooks, such as creative destruction and disruptive innovation.

Example question types

The examples below are written by RankVyuh to show the style of question. They are not taken from any CMAT paper.

1. Term definition. *A founder grows her company using only her savings and the revenue it earns, without outside investors. This is called:* (a) crowdfunding (b) bootstrapping (c) venture debt (d) a rights issue. Answer: (b).

2. Matching concept to example. *A bank replaces paper forms with an app that opens accounts in ten minutes. The product, a savings account, is unchanged. Which type of innovation is this?* (a) product (b) process (c) radical (d) frugal. Answer: (b). The thing being sold stays the same; the way it is delivered changes.

3. Intellectual property. *A start-up wants legal protection for the name and logo of its brand. What should it register?* (a) a patent (b) a copyright (c) a trademark (d) a geographical indication. Answer: (c).

4. Simple calculation. *A founder owns 100% of a company. An investor puts in money for 20% of the shares. In a later round, a second investor takes 25% of the enlarged company. What is the founder's stake now?* 80% × 75% = 60%. Questions like this test whether you understand dilution, not whether you can do hard arithmetic.

5. Scheme or institution. *Which kind of organisation gives early-stage start-ups office space, mentoring and sometimes seed funding, usually for a fixed period?* Answer: an incubator.

Most of these are recall or quick application questions. Once you know the terms, many can be answered in well under a minute, which saves time for the rest of the paper.

How to prepare for it

  1. Build a glossary. Keep one running list of terms: funding stages, types of innovation, forms of business, IP types. Add the definition in your own words and one example.
  2. Read start-up news with a purpose. When you read about a funding round or a new government scheme, note the term it illustrates. This also helps General Awareness.
  3. Practise in short timed sets. Twenty questions in 10 to 15 minutes is a reasonable target to aim for, so the section does not eat into quant time. The Innovation & Entrepreneurship mock test is a 20-question set built for this.
  4. Review wrong answers by concept. If you mix up patents and copyrights twice, that is one gap to fix, not two mistakes.

How scores and ranks are worked out

If CMAT runs in more than one shift, the bulletin says raw marks are converted to NTA percentile scores, so that a harder or easier shift does not help or hurt anyone. Ranks are based on the total score. Candidates with the same score get the same merit number, and the bulletin says they are listed by date of birth, older candidate first.

Who can take CMAT

Under the 2026 bulletin, you need a bachelor's degree in any discipline, and final-year students whose results come before the 2026-27 admission process may also apply. You must be a citizen of India, and there is no age limit. Check the 2027 bulletin for the updated academic year and any changes. For the latest schedule, see CMAT exam dates.

A sensible way to use the pattern

  • Treat all five sections as equal. Innovation & Entrepreneurship and General Awareness count as much as quant, and they are quicker to improve.
  • Answer only when your odds are better than one in five. In practice, that means answering when you can rule out at least some options.
  • Take full three-hour mocks to settle the order you attempt the sections in, since no sectional clock will force one on you.

You can take a full-length paper with all five sections and +4/−1 marking from the CMAT mock test page.
