Quick answer
IBPS PO Mains has four objective tests with 170 questions for 200 marks in 160 minutes: Reasoning (40 questions, 60 marks), General/Economy/Banking Awareness (50, 60), English Language (40, 20) and Data Analysis and Interpretation (40, 60). A separate 30-minute descriptive paper (essay and comprehension) carries 25 marks. Wrong answers cost a quarter of the question's marks. Mains and interview are weighted 80:20.
IBPS PO Mains is the stage that decides your rank. Prelims only filters candidates; under the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification, only marks from the Main exam and the interview go into the final merit list. Mains has four separately timed objective tests and a short descriptive paper in English.
Everything in the pattern section below comes from the IBPS notification for CRP PO/MT-XVI (vacancies of 2027-28). IBPS says any change to the exam structure will be announced on its website, so check ibps.in before your exam.
IBPS PO mains exam pattern
| Test | Questions | Marks | Time | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 60 | 45 min | English and Hindi |
| General / Economy / Banking Awareness / Digital / Financial Awareness, including RBI circulars | 50 | 60 | 35 min | English and Hindi |
| English Language | 40 | 20 | 35 min | English |
| Data Analysis and Interpretation | 40 | 60 | 45 min | English and Hindi |
| Objective total | 170 | 200 | 160 min | |
| Descriptive Paper (Essay and Comprehension) | 2 | 25 | 30 min | English |
Points that follow from the notification:
- Each test has its own timer. You cannot move spare time from one test to another.
- The order is not fixed. IBPS marks the table "not by sequence", so do not assume Reasoning comes first.
- You need a minimum score in every test and on the total. IBPS sets these cutoffs based on the number of vacancies.
- Scores are normalised. If the exam runs in more than one session, corrected scores are normalised by the equi-percentile method, and scores are taken up to two decimal places.
- The descriptive paper is separate. It adds 30 minutes and 25 marks on top of the 200-mark objective section.
Two things stand out. English has 40 questions but only 20 marks, the lowest marks per question in the paper. General Awareness has the most questions (50) but the least time per question among the objective tests (35 minutes).
Negative marking in Mains
A wrong answer in an objective test costs one quarter (0.25) of the marks for that question. A question you leave blank costs nothing. This rule is in the notification and applies to both Prelims and Mains.
IBPS gives marks per test, not per question. If marks are spread evenly within each test, which is how RankVyuh scores its mocks, the values work out like this:
| Test | Marks per question | Lost per wrong answer |
|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 1.5 | 0.375 |
| General Awareness | 1.2 | 0.3 |
| English Language | 0.5 | 0.125 |
| Data Analysis and Interpretation | 1.5 | 0.375 |
So a guess in Reasoning or Data Analysis risks three times as much as a guess in English. Be most careful with accuracy in the two 60-mark, 40-question tests.
IBPS PO descriptive test
The descriptive paper has 2 questions for 25 marks in 30 minutes, in English. The CRP PO/MT-XVI notification calls it "Essay and Comprehension". Practise for that format: an essay and a comprehension-based answer.
The notification says the topics may be broadly based on:
- Economic and social issues
- Emerging trends in banking and technology
- Current events
- Ethics
It also says the descriptive paper may be evaluated by an automated scoring mechanism. The notification does not give a word limit or a separate qualifying mark for this paper; those details usually come in the Mains information handout, so read it when it is released with your call letter.
How to prepare for the descriptive paper
- Practise typing, not handwriting. Mains is an online exam, so time yourself writing on a keyboard.
- Write one essay a week on a banking or economy topic. Keep it structured: an opening line that answers the question, two or three points, and a short conclusion.
- For comprehension, practise summarising a news editorial in your own words in a fixed time.
- Plan your time: about 15 minutes for each of the two questions leaves little room to edit, so outline first.
IBPS PO mains syllabus 2026: what IBPS does and does not publish
IBPS does not publish a detailed topic syllabus for Mains. The notification gives only the test names, marks and timings above, plus the footnote on descriptive topics. The lists below are the typical areas that questions in these tests have covered in past papers. They are a planning guide, not an official syllabus, and IBPS can test anything that fits a test's name.
Reasoning (typical areas)
- Puzzles and seating arrangements, often longer and with more variables than in Prelims
- Syllogism, inequality and coding
- Blood relations, direction and order-ranking
- Data sufficiency
- Input-output and machine-based problems
- Critical reasoning: statements, assumptions, arguments and conclusions
General / Economy / Banking Awareness (official scope plus typical areas)
The test name itself tells you the official scope: general awareness, economy, banking, digital and financial awareness, and RBI circulars. Typical areas inside that:
- Banking and financial current affairs of the last several months
- RBI monetary policy, regulatory circulars and payment systems
- Government schemes, budget and economic survey points
- Digital banking and payments
- Static banking facts: committees, regulators and financial institutions
English Language (typical areas)
- Reading comprehension on economy, policy and science themes
- Cloze test and fillers
- Error detection and sentence improvement
- Para jumbles and paragraph completion
- Vocabulary in context
Data Analysis and Interpretation (typical areas)
- Data interpretation sets: tables, bar and line graphs, pie charts and caselets
- Data sufficiency
- Arithmetic word problems built into DI sets
- Probability, permutations and combinations
- Quantity comparisons and number series
After Mains: personality test, interview and final merit
The notification lists three steps after the Main exam:
| Step | What the notification says |
|---|---|
| Personality test | A self-report test for candidates who qualify in Mains. Non-qualifying, but you must take it to be eligible for the interview. |
| Interview | 100 marks. Minimum 40% (35% for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates). Conducted by participating banks and coordinated by a nodal bank, with IBPS's help. |
| Final merit | Main exam and interview weighted 80:20. You must qualify in both. Ties are broken by age, with the older candidate placed higher. |
Because Mains carries 80% of the final weight, most of your final score is decided in the Main exam.
CRP PO/MT-XVI schedule for Mains
The notification's tentative schedule listed the Main exam for October 2026, the Mains result for November 2026, the personality test for November 2026, interviews for November or December 2026 and provisional allotment for January 2027.
