Quick answer
XAT 2027 is on Sunday, 3 January 2027, 2 pm to 5 pm. Part 1 has about 75 questions (VALR 26, Decision Making 21, QA & DI 28) in 170 minutes; General Knowledge has about 20 questions in 10 minutes. In Part 1 a correct answer gets +1, a wrong one −0.25, and every unanswered question after the first 8 costs 0.10. GK does not count towards the percentile.
XAT 2027 is on Sunday, 3 January 2027, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. XLRI conducts it, and the XAT 2027 bulletin says the score is recognised by over 250 institutes. XAT has an unusual rule: you can lose marks for leaving too many questions blank. This post explains the pattern, the marking, and how that penalty changes the way you should attempt the paper.
XAT 2027 exam pattern, section wise
The paper has two parts. Part 1 holds the three aptitude sections, which share one 170-minute clock. Part 2 is General Knowledge, with its own 10 minutes. The XAT 2027 figures on xatonline.in are given as approximate counts:
| Part | Section | Questions (about) | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR) | 26 | 170 minutes, shared |
| Part 1 | Decision Making (DM) | 21 | 170 minutes, shared |
| Part 1 | Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI) | 28 | 170 minutes, shared |
| Part 2 | General Knowledge (GK) | 20 | 10 minutes |
| Total | 95 | 180 minutes |
A few points from the official pages:
- No sectional time limits inside Part 1. The XAT 2027 FAQ says you can start with any section you choose, and the XAT 2026 instructions said you could move between Part 1 sections at any time. How you split the 170 minutes is your decision.
- Part 1 locks when its time ends. In XAT 2026 the official instructions said Part 1 locks automatically at 170 minutes and you then move to the GK part.
- GK mix. xatonline.in says 8 of the 20 GK questions will be on static GK and 12 on current affairs.
- Calculator. The XAT 2027 FAQ says a scientific calculator is available inside the exam interface. The XAT 2026 instructions did not allow physical calculators in the test lab.
- Five options. Every XAT 2026 question was a multiple-choice question with five options and one correct answer.
- PwD candidates got an extra 20 minutes for every hour of the test in XAT 2026.
For what each section covers topic by topic, see the XAT syllabus.
Is there an essay in XAT 2027?
The XAT 2027 pattern on xatonline.in lists only four areas (VALR, DM, QA & DI and GK) and does not mention an essay. The XAT 2026 overview and instructions did not mention one either.
XAT marking scheme
| Item | Part 1 (VALR, DM, QA & DI) | Part 2 (GK) |
|---|---|---|
| Correct answer | +1 | +1 |
| Wrong answer | −0.25 | 0 |
| Unanswered, first 8 | 0 | 0 |
| Unanswered, 9th onwards | −0.10 each | 0 |
| Counts in XAT percentile | Yes | No |
The XAT 2027 pattern on xatonline.in gives the same +1, −0.25 and 0.1-after-8 rules, says GK has no negative marking, and says GK does not count towards the percentile or cut-off. The split by part follows the XAT 2026 overview and exam-day instructions, the latest detailed instructions published. Check the XAT 2027 instructions when they appear, in case anything changes.
The unanswered-question penalty, explained
The rule reads: after 8 unattempted questions, each further unattempted question costs 0.10 marks. Three things follow from it.
- It applies to Part 1 only. Negative marking does not apply to GK, so blanks in GK cost nothing beyond the mark you did not earn.
- The wording refers to "the first 8" unattempted questions. The official pages do not describe a separate allowance for each section.
- A blank is not always the safe choice. In most tests, skipping is free. In XAT, once you have used your 8 free skips, every blank has a fixed cost of 0.10.
Here is why that matters. With five options (the XAT 2026 format), a blind guess is right one time in five. Over many guesses, the average result per guess is 0.2 × 1 − 0.8 × 0.25 = 0. A blank beyond the eighth is a sure −0.10. So, on average, a pure guess is 0.10 better than a blank once you are past the free 8.
If you can rule out even one option, the average from guessing rises to 0.25 × 1 − 0.75 × 0.25 = +0.06. Rule out two and it becomes about +0.17.
This is a long-run average, not a promise for any single question. A guess can still be wrong and cost you 0.25. But as a rule for the last few minutes of Part 1: do not leave more than 8 questions blank without a reason.
Worked example: calculating your net score
These numbers are made up to show the method. Assume Part 1 has 75 questions and GK has 20.
Student A answers 58 questions in Part 1: 44 correct and 14 wrong. That leaves 17 unanswered.
- Correct: 44 × 1 = 44
- Wrong: 14 × 0.25 = 3.5 deducted
- Unanswered: 17 − 8 = 9 beyond the free allowance, so 9 × 0.10 = 0.9 deducted
- Part 1 net score: 44 − 3.5 − 0.9 = 39.6
In GK, Student A attempts all 20 and gets 11 right. GK score: 11. Wrong GK answers cost nothing. This 11 is reported separately and does not enter the 39.6 that drives the percentile.
Student B has the same 58 answers but, in the last two minutes, marks a quick guess on 9 of the 17 blanks, keeping exactly 8 unanswered. Suppose 2 of the 9 guesses are right and 7 are wrong:
| Student A | Student B | |
|---|---|---|
| Correct | 44 | 46 |
| Wrong | 14 | 21 |
| Unanswered | 17 | 8 |
| Marks for correct | +44 | +46 |
| Wrong-answer deduction | −3.5 | −5.25 |
| Unanswered deduction | −0.9 | 0 |
| Part 1 net score | 39.6 | 40.75 |
Student B gains 1.15 marks. With 1 right out of 9 instead of 2, B would score 39.5, slightly below A. Getting 1 right in 9 is a bit worse than the one-in-five average, so the gamble pays more often than not, but not every time. It works best when you have narrowed the options on those questions instead of guessing blind.
Does GK count in XAT?
Not for the percentile. xatonline.in says the GK score does not contribute to the overall percentile or cut-off score, and is considered in selection only for XLRI programmes. So GK matters if XLRI is on your list.
Because GK has no negative marking, attempt all 20 questions. A guess there can only help.

How to practise for this pattern
The free-movement Part 1 and the skip penalty both reward planning. In mocks, decide how long you will spend on each section, and keep count of your blanks as you go. Practise the section that feels least familiar on its own first, for example Decision Making. Then take full papers on RankVyuh's XAT mock tests, which apply the +1, −0.25 and 0.10 rules and score GK separately. The XAT exam pattern page has a one-screen summary to keep beside you.
