What happened
On 1 November 2026, the government released provisional GST revenue data for October 2026. As reported by Business Today (citing Ministry of Finance data), IANS and ANI:
- Gross GST collection: ₹2,31,290 crore, up 22.9% from ₹1,88,125 crore in October 2025.
- Net GST collection (after refunds): ₹2,03,356 crore, up 25.6% from ₹1,61,900 crore.
- GST on imports: ₹72,246 crore, up 42.2%, the fastest-growing component.
- Domestic gross revenue: ₹1,59,044 crore, up 15.8%.
Background
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's main indirect tax on the supply of goods and services. It has three parts: CGST (goes to the Centre), SGST (goes to the State) and IGST (on inter-State supplies and imports, later shared between the Centre and States). Monthly figures are released at the start of the following month and are provisional.
Getting the base right. In November 2025, All India Radio News reported October 2025 gross GST at "over ₹1.95 lakh crore", up 4.6%. That figure included compensation cess of ₹7,812 crore. Its components were CGST ₹36,547 crore, SGST ₹45,134 crore and IGST ₹1,06,443 crore, which add up to about ₹1,88,125 crore. The October 2026 data compares against this CGST + SGST + IGST total, not the ₹1.95 lakh crore headline, and the reported 2026 figures carry no cess line. Students should not compute growth using the older ₹1.95 lakh crore number.
All India Radio News also reported in 2025 that GST rate cuts took effect on 22 September 2025, so the October 2025 base month came soon after those cuts. None of the 2026 reports we checked attributes October 2026 growth to the festive season or to rate changes.

- IGST split (Oct 2026): ₹64,769 crore domestic and ₹72,246 crore on imports.
- Refunds: domestic refunds ₹14,007 crore (up 9.8%); export refunds through ICEGATE ₹13,927 crore (up 3.4%), as reported by IANS.
- Net domestic revenue: about ₹1.45 lakh crore (up 16.4%); net customs-related GST: ₹58,319 crore (up 56.2%).
- April–October 2026-27: gross GST ₹14,77,569 crore (up 13.2% from ₹13,05,213 crore); net GST ₹12,69,486 crore (up 12.6% from ₹11,27,355 crore).
- States (domestic revenue, as reported by ANI): Maharashtra ₹35,150 crore (+13%), Karnataka ₹15,922 crore (+18%), Gujarat ₹13,516 crore (+16%), Haryana ₹11,529 crore (+17%), Assam ₹1,934 crore (+47%).
- Previous month: gross GST for September 2026 was over ₹2.03 lakh crore, up 14.7%, as reported by All India Radio News. October's growth was faster.
Why it matters
- Fiscal health: Higher GST receipts support both Union and State budgets, since SGST and the States' share of IGST flow to the States.
- Demand signal: A 15.8% rise in domestic gross revenue points to stronger taxable activity in the economy, as the reports read the data.
- Import dependence: GST on imports grew much faster (42.2%) than domestic GST (15.8%), so part of the jump comes from imports rather than domestic consumption.
- Net vs gross: Net revenue grew faster than gross because refunds rose only 6.5%; net revenue is what the governments actually keep.
Issues and criticism
- Import-heavy growth: IANS and ANI credit both domestic activity and a sharp rise in import revenue, but imports grew far faster (42.2% against 15.8%). Revenue from imports depends on trade volumes and global prices, so a rise led by imports says less about domestic consumption.
- Provisional data: Monthly figures can change slightly on finalisation.
- Uneven across States: Growth ranged widely across States, from 13% in Maharashtra to 47% in Assam among the States reported by ANI.
- Comparability: Headlines from 2025 included cess while the 2026 reports show no cess line, which can confuse year-on-year comparisons if the right base is not used.
Way forward
- Track whether domestic revenue growth holds in the coming months, separate from import-led gains.
- Keep refund processing quick for exporters so that working capital is not blocked.
- Publish clear notes on what each headline figure includes (cess or no cess) to keep comparisons clean.
