Quick answer
Decision Making is one of the three Part 1 sections of XAT 2027, with about 21 of the roughly 75 Part 1 questions. It shares the 170-minute Part 1 clock with VALR and QA & DI, with no sectional time limit. Questions present personal and professional scenarios: ethical dilemmas, managerial choices and data-based allocation sets. Marking is +1 for a correct answer and −0.25 for a wrong one.
Decision Making (DM) is the section that sets XAT apart from most other MBA entrance tests. The official site, xatonline.in, notes that XAT preparation overlaps with other MBA exams except for this section. This post explains what DM tests, how it fits into the XAT 2027 paper, the question types you will meet, and a method to work through them. It ends with three short practice situations that we wrote ourselves, with reasoning for each answer.
For the full paper, marking and the unanswered-question penalty in detail, read our XAT 2027 exam pattern and marking guide. This post does not repeat that material.
What the Decision Making section tests
According to xatonline.in, DM sets out situations from personal and working life. To answer, you have to think critically, solve problems and set priorities before reaching a decision.
In practice, that means you are rarely asked for a fact or a formula. You are asked to judge. Which action is most appropriate? Which argument is strongest? Which assignment of people to tasks meets every condition? There is still one correct answer per question, so the judgement has to be reasoned, not a matter of taste.
Decision Making in XAT 2027 at a glance
| Item | What xatonline.in states for XAT 2027 |
|---|---|
| Questions in DM | About 21 (out of about 75 in Part 1; the full paper, including GK, has about 95) |
| Where it sits | Part 1, with VALR and QA & DI |
| Time | Part 1 has 170 minutes in total, shared by the three sections |
| Sectional time limit | None; you can start with any section and switch between them |
| Marks per question | 1 |
| Wrong answer | −0.25 |
| Skipped questions | First 8 free; each one after that costs 0.10 (no separate allowance per section is described) |
The question counts are given on the official site as approximate. The XAT 2026 instructions said every question had five options with one correct choice; check the XAT 2027 instructions when they are published. The XAT syllabus page lists what the other sections cover.
Because there is no separate DM timer, how long you spend here is your call. DM passages can be long, so set a time budget for the section in your mocks and stick to it.
Common question types
1. Ethical dilemmas
A person faces a choice where honesty, fairness or rules pull against loyalty, profit or convenience. You choose the most (or least) appropriate response. The right option usually fixes the problem, respects rules and people's rights, and is proportionate to the wrongdoing.
2. Managerial and personal situations
A manager, employee, student or family member must act under limits of time, money or authority. Questions ask for the best course of action, the first step, the most important factor, or the information that would most help the decision. Here, read the exact question. "The first thing to do" and "the best overall plan" can have different answers.
3. Data-based allocation and arrangement sets
These look like logical reasoning sets with a business setting: assigning people to projects, scheduling meetings, choosing vendors, or splitting a budget under rules. They reward careful bookkeeping more than judgement, and the answers are fully determined by the conditions.
Many sets mix types: a short case followed by three or four questions that ask for different things.
A method for DM questions
- Find the decision maker and their goal. Whose shoes are you in? A branch manager and the company's CEO have different powers and different duties.
- List the stakeholders and the hard limits. Law, company policy, safety and stated deadlines are limits. Preferences are not.
- Remove clearly wrong options first. Drop any option that breaks a law or policy, goes beyond the person's authority, punishes before checking facts, or does not touch the actual problem.
- Compare what is left against the exact question. Most appropriate, first step, least appropriate, strongest argument: each needs a different test.
- Prefer actions that solve the problem and keep options open. Between two fair choices, the one that fixes the issue and preserves relationships is usually stronger than one that only does one of those.
- For data sets, fix what is certain first. Write every condition as a short note, place anything forced, then branch only where you must.
Two habits help. Do not pick the longest or most "balanced-sounding" option by reflex; check that it actually answers the question. And do not bring in facts the case does not give you.
Original practice situations
These three situations are written by RankVyuh for this post. They are not taken from any XAT paper, but they follow the five-option style.
Situation 1: The travel claims
Meera leads a sales team of eight. She notices that Arjun, her strongest performer, has been adding about ₹300 a month to his travel claims for the past year, above what his receipts show. Company policy says claims must match receipts.
What should Meera do?
- A. Ignore it, since the amount is small and Arjun brings in the most business.
- B. Report Arjun to HR at once and recommend his dismissal.
- C. Speak to Arjun privately, ask him to explain, and, if the claims are wrong, have him correct the claims and repay the excess.
- D. Quietly cut the total amount from Arjun's next bonus.
- E. Email the whole team a reminder about the claims policy without naming anyone.
Answer: C. It hears Arjun first, fixes the money, and follows policy. A tolerates a breach. B punishes before checking the facts. D is an off-the-record penalty Meera may not have the authority to impose. E is fine as an extra step but does nothing about the claims already made.
Situation 2: One machine, two orders
Sunil runs a small plant. A machine breakdown means he can finish only one of two orders by Friday. Order P is from a client of ten years, worth ₹8 lakh, with a ₹50,000 penalty for late delivery. Order Q is from a new client, worth ₹5 lakh, with no penalty, but the client has said future business depends on this delivery.
Which information would most help Sunil decide?
- A. The age of the broken machine.
- B. Whether either client would accept delivery a few days late.
- C. The number of workers on each shift.
- D. The company's profit last year.
- E. Which client placed its order first.
Answer: B. If one client can wait a few days, Sunil may be able to meet both orders and the conflict disappears. A and C matter for repairs and capacity, not for choosing between clients. D says nothing about this decision. E is a weak rule; order date does not capture the penalty or the future business at stake.
Situation 3: Assigning four trainees
A manager must assign four trainees, Asha, Bilal, Chitra and Dev, to four projects: Audit, Branding, Customer Service and Data. Each person gets exactly one project.
- Audit needs a trained person, and Chitra is the only trainee trained in audit.
- Asha cannot be on Data.
- Bilal must be on Branding or Customer Service.
- Dev has asked not to be on Customer Service.
The manager also has fit scores out of 10:
| Trainee | Branding | Customer Service |
|---|---|---|
| Asha | 7 | 5 |
| Bilal | 6 | 8 |
Question (a): Who must be on Data? Chitra is on Audit. Asha cannot take Data and Bilal must take Branding or Customer Service, so Dev takes Data. That also keeps Dev off Customer Service.
Question (b): Which assignment gives the higher total fit score for Branding and Customer Service? Asha on Branding and Bilal on Customer Service gives 7 + 8 = 15. The other way round gives 5 + 6 = 11. So Asha on Branding, Bilal on Customer Service.
Notice the order of work: the forced placement (Chitra) came first, then the one that followed from two rules (Dev), and only then the comparison.
How to practise
Start with the section on its own, untimed, and write down why each wrong option is wrong. That habit builds the elimination skill DM depends on. xatonline.in also links past XAT question papers, which show the official style. Then move to timed sectional practice on our XAT Decision Making mock test, and finally full papers on RankVyuh's XAT mock tests, where DM shares the clock with the other two sections. Keep the XAT exam pattern summary handy while you plan your time split.
