Key terms

Vande Bharat Sleeper
Self-propelled, fully air-conditioned sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train, built for overnight long-distance travel
TCAS / Kavach
TCAS (Train Collision Avoidance System) is the term used in the Ministry of Railways release; ANI reports the train carries Kavach, India's indigenous automatic train protection system
MEMU
Mainline Electric Multiple Unit: an electric suburban/short-distance train with no separate locomotive
Regenerative braking
Braking that turns the train's motion back into electrical energy instead of wasting it as heat

What happened

On 31 October 2026, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly flagged off the Varanasi–New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Express at Banaras Railway Station, Varanasi (All India Radio).

  • The train is fully air-conditioned, with 16 coaches and a capacity of 823 passengers.
  • At the same event, the two leaders also flagged off two new MEMU services: Varanasi City–Rajatalab and Prayagraj Rambagh–Varanasi (AIR).
  • UNI and ETV Bharat describe it as the country's second Vande Bharat Sleeper train; it is also Uttar Pradesh's first.

Background

  • Vande Bharat trains are self-propelled, semi-high-speed trains designed and built in India.
  • The sleeper version is designed for overnight trips. On 1 January 2026 the Railway Minister said the country's first Vande Bharat sleeper train, indigenously designed and manufactured, would run between Guwahati and Kolkata and had completed its final high-speed trial (AIR).
  • According to the Ministry of Railways, Vande Bharat Sleeper services were introduced on the Howrah–Guwahati corridor (with the return journey) in January 2026. The Varanasi–New Delhi train is the next route (PIB, 30 Oct 2026).
  • On this route, the train competes with the existing overnight Shiv Ganga Express, which the ministry uses as its benchmark for time savings.

Safety and design features listed by the Ministry of Railways:

  • Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS); ANI reports that the train carries the indigenous Kavach train protection system.
  • Car body of austenitic stainless steel meeting EN 15227 crash standards; compliance with EN 45545 HL3 fire-safety standards; fire barrier doors.
  • Smoke and fire detection, CCTV cameras, passenger emergency alarm push buttons and disaster management lights.
  • Regenerative braking, under-slung propulsion and an aerodynamic design.
  • Vacuum toilets, special berths and toilets for differently-abled passengers, USB Type A and C charging ports, Wi-Fi, and a hot-water shower in First AC.
  • An air-conditioned driver cab and a toilet for the crew. At the launch, Vaishnaw said the design pays attention to the comfort of both passengers and crew, including loco pilots (AIR).

Other announcements in Varanasi (AIR):

  • Vaishnaw said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a Northern Corridor of the bullet train network: Delhi–Agra–Kanpur–Lucknow–Ayodhya, extending to Varanasi, Patna and later Guwahati. He said Delhi to Varanasi would then take 3 hours 33 minutes.
  • He inspected the redevelopment of Kashi Railway Station and the under-construction Namo Setu, a rail-cum-road bridge with a six-lane highway on the upper deck and four railway tracks on the lower deck.

Why it matters

  • Overnight travel on a busy corridor: The ministry says the service is meant for pilgrims, tourists, students, working professionals and families travelling between eastern Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region.
  • Upgrading the sleeper segment: The ministry calls the Vande Bharat Sleeper a next-generation train for long-distance overnight journeys; a second route widens its reach beyond the eastern corridor.
  • Safety: TCAS, crash-standard car bodies and fire-safety compliance put rail safety, a regular GS III theme, at the centre of the design.
  • Regional connectivity: Adityanath said the new services will strengthen connectivity in the Purvanchal region (AIR).

Issues and criticism

  • Modest time saving: The official saving over the Shiv Ganga Express is 35–55 minutes. On an overnight train, departure and arrival times decide convenience more than raw speed, so the real gain is comfort and safety rather than a much shorter trip.
  • Fares not in the official release: The ministry's release gave no fares. ETV Bharat published estimates that it said were not final, so passengers had no confirmed figure before launch.
  • Conflicting early reports: Some media reports before the launch gave different stops, timings and off days. Students should rely on the Ministry of Railways version given above.
  • Political claims: Vaishnaw said Uttar Pradesh's railway budget rose from Rs 1,000 crore under earlier governments to Rs 20,000 crore now (UNI). This is the minister's claim and was not independently verified in the reports.

Way forward

  1. Publish fares, occupancy and punctuality data so the service can be judged on results.
  2. Extend Vande Bharat Sleeper trains to other long overnight routes as more rakes become available.
  3. Fit TCAS/Kavach across the network, not only on new trains, so safety gains reach all passengers.
  4. Finish linked works such as Namo Setu and station redevelopment so the faster trains are not slowed by bottlenecks.
