Why it matters
- A test pilot at the helm: His background in flight testing and capability development, including Tejas clearances, comes at a time when indigenous aircraft programmes are central to IAF planning (PIB; The Week).
- Joint experience: Having served as CISC during Operation Sindoor, he brings tri-service staff experience to the Chiefs of Staff Committee.
- Squadron gap: According to The Week (31 October 2026), the IAF has 29 fighter squadrons against a sanctioned strength of 42, and Tejas Mk1A deliveries have faced long delays.
Issues and criticism
The Week's analysis lists the new chief's main challenges:
- Fighter shortfall and delayed inductions: It reports that the outgoing chief had expressed dissatisfaction with delays in deliveries by HAL, and that the AMCA (fifth-generation fighter) and Tejas Mk2 are still years away.
- Acquisitions debate: Whether to buy more aircraft, including fifth-generation fighters, to improve war preparedness while building domestic production.
- Theatre commands: The Week notes the IAF's concern that theaterisation could split its limited fighter squadrons among geographical commands.
These are the publication's assessments; the PIB releases do not discuss them.
Way forward
- Close the squadron gap by speeding up Tejas Mk1A deliveries and planning for next-generation fighters, as The Week's analysis suggests.
- Use joint-staff experience to shape theatre-command reforms in a way that preserves the flexibility of air power.
- Keep backing indigenous programmes under the Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) push, which The Week says he has promoted.
